Does growing up mean giving up the things you love?

Confession time: I stole the title from a commercial on tv! But it’s worth considering: does growing up mean giving up the things you love? Sometimes, yes. We put aside childish things, or, more likely, we exchange them for things that replace them. Are the new things better? Worse?

And sometimes, no. I’m thinking right now of the things I did as a child. Saturday morning cartoons, curled up in front of the tv with a bowl of cereal in my pajamas. The best ones were The Pink Panther, especially when my dad was there. And what do I do on Saturday mornings now? Laundry. Mowing the yard. Washing the car. Need I go on?

So tomorrow I will sit down with my kids in front of the tv and relive with them the best of times. We will watch something silly, preposterous, and completely aimless. Do yourself a favor: give yourself a pass in the morning for just an hour and do something fun. Have a great weekend!

And furthermore…something fun does not have to cost and arm and a leg. Something fun can be as simple as watching cartoons, like you said. Kids will remember their parents laughing with them, playing wrestling games, celebrating simple traditions. That’s the stuff! I totally agree with you John.
